The main task in orienteering is to find a certain number of control points, with the help of a map and compass, in the order they appear on the map, in the shortest possible time.
Orienteering is a sport for all generations and can be played recreationally or competititvely. The only equipment necessary are a compass, a map and hiking gear. Competitive orienteering can be done during the day or at night. There is also ski orienteering, mountain bike orienteering and orienteering for disabled persons. Going by the length of the orienteering trail, competitions can be divided into long, medium and sprint distance races.
Serbia has produced around 150 specialised orienteering maps to International Orienteering Federation standards. The maps include many tourist locations – Fruška Gora, Zlatibor, Tara, Kopaonik and Divčibare, as well as the surroundings of Smedervska Palanka, Smederevo, Paraćin and Kruševac.
Over 30 maps have been made for Belgrade and surrounding areas, including Kalemegdan, Ada Ciganlija, Košutnjak, Topčiderski Park, Hajd Park, Tašmajdan, Lipovička Šuma forest, Avala, Jajinci and Babe.
More than a decade ago, in the National park of Kopaonik a small 3-day international orienteering event was organized. It was simply called “Kopaonik open". After humble beginning with approximately 150 competitors and with only one tent in finish area it slowly started growing... “Kopaonik open” became a brand, known for its challenging terrains, perfect maps, and good organization in all aspects. Already in 2004 Balkan Championship has been organized on Kopaonik and in 2009 EYOC (European Youth Orienteering Championship), both in arrangement of the same organizing team, SD Jasenica from Smederevska Palanka, always with help and support of many orienteering and club friends. In parallel the tradition of “Kopaonik open” has been constantly kept. Three days wasn't enough so in 2010 it became first 5-days 6-stages international orienteering event in Serbia ever. “Kopaonik open” is worldwide known orienteering competition. They are offering 6 days of orienteering challenges, combination of two classical long, two middle and one sprint distance challenges plus one night orienteering challenge with separate ranking, 1 training plus 6 competition stages in total.
You may explore and training (camp) possibilities after the competition in agreement with the organizer.
